Dear Parents and UCSI Community,
The Malaysian Education Blueprint puts a premium on preparing students for the needs of the 21st century and Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). This means our students need to be equipped with the right tools to face the challenges ahead as today’s education needs to develop the irreplaceable human skills in children. These skills still remain relevant in today’s world of rapidly changing technology. Besides, the coronavirus pandemic has reshaped the idea of education and what learning looks like in the 21st century. The pandemic is forcing educators, parents, and students to think critically, problem-solve, be creative, communicate, collaborate and be agile.
In the real world, we all know high performing companies ask for more than good grades. Success is not only judged by examination grades but also by how students achieve their full potential in other areas of school life such as sports and arts, as well as by developing the values of compassion, responsibility and integrity to be effective communicators, creative thinkers and independent learners. The need for a holistic skills-based approach is therefore becoming more evident. Therefore, it is our responsibilities as educators to provide holistic opportunities to ensure students have the skills to communicate, be resilient, adapt and be creative. As an international school, providing true education shall be our main priority so that students can develop the right learning skills while instilling strong character, and we take great pride and pleasure in seeing them blossom into successful individuals.
True education is about teaching children to have a sense of ownership in their own learning journey, being an active learner by having the courage to ask questions and the resourcefulness to discover the answers, and being agile to adapt to different scenarios. Learning needs to be about experiences beyond the classroom. It is about participating in the wider school community and applying their skills and insights in various roles and activities e.g. leading or participating in initiatives such as the arts, sports, music, competitions, and community service.
We also need to be aware that education in a cosmopolitan environment now requires students to become confident global citizens ready for the future. Therefore, the learning environment should enable students to develop international mindedness through topics taught within the curriculum and through exposure to activities beyond the classroom that allows them to integrate with people from all around the world. We must extend our efforts to globalise our environment by training our students to be trilingual – to speak at least Bahasa Melayu, English, and Mandarin. Being multilingual can help our students see the world in different ways, be more open-minded and ready to welcome new ideas and experiences.
I am delighted to be a part of UCSI Education Group as the COO of UCSI International School Springhill Campus. My ultimate aim is to lead the school community and to develop the Springhill Campus into a leader in the education scene of Negeri Sembilan. For our current parents, thank you for choosing UCSI International School Springhill Campus as the place to unlock the potential of your children and nurture them to become global citizens and future leaders. For the prospective parents, I welcome you to come and take a tour of the school, meet our staff and find out what we can offer your child and become part of our learning community.
I look forward to getting to know the community and building upon the foundations that have been put into place here. With our collective efforts and essential partnership, we will surely strengthen and grow, enabling our students to become internationally minded citizens of the world, capable of contributing positively to communities and making the future a brighter and better place for everyone.
